Experimentica at Chapter

"Established in 2001, Experimentica is an annual international Live Art festival produced by Chapter in Cardiff.

The festival is programmed through a mix of special commissions and invitations and selection via an international open call.

It’s an important event in the Welsh arts calendar and an opportunity for artists to introduce new work and for audiences to be introduced to a wide variety of practices.

Last year we trialed a Pay What You Decide pricing model for all events at the festival, resulting in our largest ever audience and box office takings, so we are continuing this model for 2018.

The reputation of the festival among artists and audiences is steadily growing, we are now regularly receiving over 800 open call applications per year.

The relatively small scale of the festival is appreciated by artists as it allows them to have engaged relationships with other artists, audiences and the programming and technical teams.

The title of this year’s festival, About Time, is inspired by a new work by Chapter Associate artist Rhodri Davies, a composition for an international ensemble of musicians co-commissioned by Chapter, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and Counterflows. Other projects include a residency by Greg Wohead and collaborators culminating in a durational dusk ‘til dawn performance, a new commission for Jo Fong and Sonia Hughes supported by LAUK’s Diverse Actions, and an offsite project by Canadian interdisciplinary performance company Theatre Replacement.

We are interested in growing the festival further by developing more commissioning opportunities in partnership with organisations in the UK and internationally, so please do contact Cathy Boyce if you are interested in future collaborations."
